Chapter 15

Nathaniel’s long, gray trench coat swung loosely around his thin frame as he closed the door behind him. Harry growled at Nathaniel, obviously sensing his animosity. Tessa clicked her fingers and Harry ran over to her and sat down at her feet.

“I’m here to talk to you. Both of you.” Nathaniel looked past Tessa at Cassie, and glared. “All I’m hearing around town is that the two of you suspect me in this murder.”

“What?” Cassie stared at him. “Where have you heard that?”

“Where haven’t I, is the better question.” Nathaniel scowled as he stepped farther into the house, without being invited. “I have had enough of the whispering and the strange looks. I won’t have my reputation ruined because you two are playing detectives!”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Nathaniel.” Tessa crossed her arms as she studied him. “We’re certainly not going around spreading rumors about you. However, it’s no secret that you were upset with the fact that Brad and his partner Nick lied to the Stouts and were planning on building a wind farm.”

“Of course I was!” Nathaniel looked up at the ceiling as he groaned. “It was immoral! They both knew it! But they just kept throwing money around to try to make all of the problems with the deal go away.” He lowered his voice as he continued. “I had nothing to do with that man’s murder, but I should have, for what he threatened to do to this town. I’ve never seen such underhanded business practices in my life.”

“Did you actually speak to Brad about all of this? Or only Nick?” Cassie looked into his eyes.

“I spoke to both of them about all of it. I know they tried to hide the negative impacts the wind farm will have on the environment and the residents.” Nathaniel shook his head. “I just can’t understand people that will do anything just to profit for themselves.”

“Negative impacts?” Cassie raised an eyebrow. “What negative impacts?”

“Wind farms have been known to impact the wild life in the area, especially the birds. The environmental and noise impact of the wind turbines had to be assessed before a permit could be issued and they could be installed. I spoke to the person that did the initial inspection and he admitted that the negative effects on the area would be significant. Especially the noise pollution. But he said he got pulled off the job and someone else completed the inspection.” Nathaniel nodded. “When Nick and Brad got the report it showed no negative impacts. The report claimed the effect would be minimal. The inspector signed off on the property and the permit was issued. So, how does that happen?” He looked between the two women.

“Someone lied.” Tessa frowned.

“Someone paid the right person off.” Cassie sighed as she recalled some of the discussions that her husband and his business partners would have. “The right amount of money will make anything go away.”

“Exactly.” Nathaniel snapped his fingers. “Just like that, there were no significant environmental and noise pollution risks listed in the report.
